How to choose the right plot for your dream cabin

A good plot is the foundation of a successful cabin project. Here we share our best tips for choosing a plot.

Choosing the right plot is one of the most important decisions you make when building a cabin. The plot lays the foundation for the entire project and affects everything from the layout to your everyday enjoyment. In this article, we share our best tips based on nearly 25 years of experience.

Think carefully about how far you are willing to travel to reach the cabin. A cabin that lies too far away rarely gets used as much as you would like. Consider the road connection too – is the road cleared of snow in winter? Can you drive right up to it, or do you have to walk part of the way?
Location and accessibility

A well-placed cabin makes the most of the plot's natural qualities.

Sunlight and views

The amount of sunlight is crucial to your enjoyment of the cabin. Investigate how the sun reaches the plot throughout the day and the year. A plot with evening sun on the terrace is often preferable. The view should also be considered – what do you see from the living room, from the terrace, from the bedrooms?

Remember that trees can be felled and the view can change, but the basic sunlight conditions are governed by the plot's position in the terrain and cannot be altered.

Terrain and ground conditions

The terrain affects both building costs and how the cabin is positioned. A flat plot is easier to build on, but a sloping plot can offer exciting architectural possibilities and better views. The ground conditions determine what kind of foundation is needed.

We always recommend a site inspection of the plot before making a final decision. Our experienced advisers can help you assess the plot's potential and any challenges.
