The complete guide to turf roof maintenance

A turf roof is a traditional, natural solution that requires the right care. Learn how to keep your roof in top condition.

Turf roofs have been part of Norwegian building tradition for thousands of years. The living roof provides natural insulation, dampens sound and blends perfectly into the Norwegian landscape. With proper maintenance, a turf roof can last for many decades.

  • Annual inspection is key
  • Inspect the roof thoroughly at least twice a year – in spring and autumn. Look for signs of erosion, areas where the turf has slipped, or places where weeds have taken over. Spotting problems early makes repairs easier and cheaper.
  • Check that drainage is working optimally
  • Remove leaves and twigs that have accumulated
  • Look for signs of moss or lichen growth

Inspect penetrations and flashing

A healthy turf roof should have lush growth of grass and herbs, but no trees or large shrubs. Trees that take root can damage the roof membrane and must be removed carefully. Moss growth is often a sign of too much shade or moisture.
Managing vegetation

A well-maintained turf roof blooms with natural vegetation throughout the season.

Fertilising and care

Most turf roofs need fertilising every two to three years to maintain lush growth. Use a fertiliser suited to grass growth, and apply it in early spring. Avoid overwatering – a turf roof should withstand drought, and too much moisture can lead to fungal growth.
